THE 1951 SEASON:

A New Zealand side went to Australia this year, trials for selection being held at Christchurch, Palmerston North and Wellington. W. M. Cunniffe (Millerton Rangers) and Max J. Ryan (Westport White Star) took part in the series at Christchurch, the former also appearing at Wellington.

There was only one draw (to six losses) in Buller’s first-class programme. A southern tour was undertaken, three minor fixtures (two won) also being played; a minor match was lost at home, too.

The seven Buller games, which included another overseas side to visit — Fiji — had these results:

v Canterbury At Westport Lost 3 to 30
v West Coast At Westport Drew 8 to 8
v West Coast At Hokitika Lost 6 to 11
v North Otago At Oamaru Lost 6 to 23
v Ashburton County At Ashburton Lost 11 to 16
v Fiji At Westport Lost 3 to 6
v West Coast At Greymouth Lost 3 to 18 {Seddon Shield}
