THE 1955 SEASON:

At last Buller moved from what might be termed “the doldrums” and finished the year with a credit balance of wins, five successes to three losses. One visitor to Westport for the first time was Auckland, while of special merit was the one-point victory over a strong Centurions Club side, the Centurions including All Blacks in R.W.H.Scott, R.A.Jarden, Ross M.Smith, R.G.Bowers, V.D.Bevan, P.S.Burke, W.H.Clark and I.M.H.Vodanovich, with two others in the XV, I.N.MacEwan and D.N.McIntosh, winning a Silver Fern.

The matches that took place were:

v Canterbury At Westport Won 11 to 6
v West Coast At Hokitika Won 15 to 3
v West Coast At Westport Won 9 to 6
v Golden Bay-Motueka At Takaka Won 12 to 5
v Nelson At Nelson *Lost 5 to 6 {Seddon Shield}
v South Canterbury At Timaru Lost 13 to 18
v Auckland At Westport Lost 6 to 19
v Centurions Club At Westport Won 31 to 30

* For Seddon Shield, Buller’s converted try being overtaken by Nelson’s try and penalty goal

George Anderson (Granity Rover), J.R.Burrow (Westport Old Boys), J.E.Cockfield (Waimangaroa United), J. H. Duncan (Westport Old Boys), J.R.McArthur (Ngakawau), D.P.Mumm (Ngakawau), W. J.Mumm jnr (Ngakawau), J.B.Shaw (Westport Old Boys), C.J.Stewart (Westport Old Boys) and Brinley Tyler (Ngakawau) were members of the West Coast-Buller combination against the visiting Australian team at Greymouth. George Anderson and J.B.Shaw had earlier played for South Island in the Inter-Island match at Wellington, whilst J.B.Shaw also appeared for a New Zealand XV against The Rest of New Zealand, George Anderson being a replacement for the latter side during the game.

J.B.Marshall (Waimangaroa United) toured with the New Zealand Colts team to Australia and Ceylon. He had played for South Island Colts, along with C.J.Stewart, in the Colts Inter-Island engagement at Palmerston North; this fixture served as a trial.

W.J.Mumm jnr, became the first Buller player to record a century of first-class appearances when he took part in the Seddon Shield challenge against Nelson, at Nelson. “Bill” Mumm went on to total 104 such matches.
