THE 1990 SEASON:

The first season of the 1990’s saw Buller in sixth place in Division III but there were some promising signs for the future.

The play of Thomas Stuart and Glenn Elley was getting better and better, Chris Alexander was establishing himself as the new Buller half back and John Brazil and Wayne Patterson were providing a front row with both size and strength.

Buller gave Marlborough a shock in the Seddon Shield but were not quite able to wrest victory from Marlborough. However, the signs of a Buller revival were clearly becoming apparent.

Thomas Stuart played his 50th game for Buller against West Coast while David Baird passed a milestone which few players achieve, whatever their Union Baird passed 500 points for Buller, a record which will almost certainly stand for many years. His contribution to Buller Rugby in the 80’s was immeasurable whether for his outstanding goal kicking or his mercurial running and handling skills.

It is impossible to measure players of different eras against each other, but there can be little doubt that if Baird has not been the most valuable player in Buller’s recent history, then he must be very close to it.

v West Coast at Greymouth Lost 3-21
v Nelson-Bays at Motueka Lost 10-45
