THE 1906 SEASON:
This was the year of the institution of the Seddon Shield competition. As a memorial to a great New Zealand politician, Richard John Seddon, Buller, Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast Unions subscribed to provide a trophy to be competed for on a challenge basis between those four organisations. To find the first holder, Nelson and Marlborough played at Blenheim, and Buller and West Coast met at Greymouth in the preliminary round, the final between Buller and Marlborough going to the visiting team.

Buller’s matches were:-

v. West Coast At Greymouth Won 9 to 3
v. Marlborough At Westport Lost 0 to 3

D.Dennehy (Westport White Star) became Buller’s second South Island representative when he played on the side of the scrummage in the Inter-island match at Wellington.
