THE 1913 SEASON:
This was a happy year for Buller, all five engagements being won. Included was the annexing of the Seddon Shield for the first time. The Shield was won by the only score of the match, Clement Green taking a Mark for Samuel Bligh to kick a goal. Buller’s five wins had these results:-

v. West Coast At Greymouth Won 20 to 9
v. Canterbury “B” At Westport Won 8 to 5
v. Nelson At Nelson Won 16 to 3
v. Marlborough At Blenheim Won 3 to 0 {Seddon Shield}
v. West Coast At Westport Won 9 to 5

The successful XV in the Seddon Shield challenge was:-

  • C. Lamplough (Westport)
  • Ralph Hansby (Westport White Star)
  • Robt. A. Colvin (Westport White Star)
  • Arthur Batt (Westport White Star)
  • H. (“Derby”) Atchison (Westport)
  • Frank Hansby (Westport White Star)
  • Clement Green (Westport)
  • T. McElwede (Westport Rival)
  • Jas Tannahill (Westport)
  • C. Molloy (Westport White Star)
  • Con. Hall (Westport Rival)
  • Thos. Fisher (Westport White Star)
  • T. A. French (Westport)
  • Samuel Bligh (Capt.) (Westport)
  • W. (“Trussy”) Ryan (Westport Rival)

T.A.French again played for New Zealand Maoris, touring to Australia as well as playing in New Zealand for the side.

In Australia “Tom” French appeared in seven of the eight fixtures, in New Zealand playing in the two minor games before going overseas, and in the seven first-class matches on his return. In September the Australian team which had been touring New Zealand met a New Zealand Maori XV in an unofficial match at Auckland, as a benefit for S. M. J. Piki (Canterbury) who had broken a leg in the first of the Maori side’s matches in Australia; T. A. French was a player in that Auckland engagement, too.
