THE 1923 SEASON:
Yet another Buller player received New Zealand selection this year.
This was R.G.Tunnicliff (Umere), who was in the All Black XV against New South Wales, at Wellington; he was a hooker in the old 2-3-2 scrummage.
Geo. Stuart (Mokihinui) gained South Island selection, playing in the drawn Inter-Island match of the year.
Five representative games were played, the Seddon Shield challenge being drawn for the second time in succession, and Golden Bay-Motueka being met for the first time:-
v. West Coast At Greymouth Lost 6 to 9
v. West Coast At Westport Lost 13 to 20
v. Canterbury “B” At Westport Lost 6 to 25
v. West Coast At Greymouth Drew 3 to 3 {Seddon Shield}
v. Golden Bay-Motueka At Westport Drew 8 to 8
The Union was added to by the transfer of Murchison Sub-Union from Nelson. The Sub-Union had been founded in 1910 by the uniting of Murchison, Braeburn and Maruia Clubs, and affiliated to Nelson Union. The Sub-Union was to be almost a Murchison Club one only, the area being too small to provide for more than one Club, although the Sub-Union status was retained. Between this season and 1927 (both inclusive) Murchison Club supplied five players to Buller’s representative sides. In 1931 the area was transferred to Golden Bay-Motueka, without alteration to either Union’s boundaries, its only Club, Murchison Club, still playing in the Golden Bay-Motueka competitions.
In May it was announced that a Cup for the third grade competition had been presented by Mr.C.Phillips .
