THE 1944 SEASON:
Matches this season were with other Seddon Shield Districts Unions only — Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast, an unusual feature being that West Coast was played four times.

Each of the opponents challenged for the Seddon Shield, the year’s seven fixtures resulting:

v. West Coast At Westport Won 8 to 5
v. West Coast At Greymouth Lost 6 to 11
v. Marlborough At Westport Won 28 to 13 {Seddon Shield}
v. Nelson At Westport Won 25 to 3 {Seddon Shield}
v. West Coast At Westport Drew 0 to 0 {Seddon Shield}
v. Marlborough At Blenheim Drew 3 to 3
v. West Coast At Greymouth Lost 11 to 14

After being in abeyance since 1939, the Inter-Island match had been resumed in 1943, and this season Buller was once more represented in the South Island XV, Oliver Smallholme (Ngakawau) filling the centre-threequarter position against North Island, at Christchurch.
