THE 1961 SEASON:
Another one of “those” seasons, with the winning, holding, and losing of the Seddon Shield in three consecutive fixtures.
The list of matches was:
v. Canterbury At Westport Lost 6 to 31
v. West Coast At Hokitika Lost 8 to 16
v. West Coast At Westport Lost 5 to 8
v. Golden Bay-Motueka At Motueka Won 3 to 0 {Seddon Shield}
v. Nelson At Westport Won 6 to 5 {Seddon Shield}
v. Marlborough At Westport Lost 9 to 10 {Seddon Shield}
v. Wellington XV At Westport Lost 8 to 21
v. South Canterbury At Westport Lost 0 to 24
France visited New Zealand for the first time, the itinerary not including Buller.
Three Test matches were played, W.F.Duncan (Westport White Star) being the only representative from the Union to be called to a trial for All Black honours; he was a replacement in Christchurch, in the South Island try-out, at half-time.
