THE 1963 SEASON:

Although only three of eight matches were won, the importance of the victories lay in the fact that each was a Seddon Shield defence. However, a fourth success was required for the Shield to have remained in Westport, and Nelson did not permit that.

In the activities of the season the following were the results:

v. West Coast At Hokitika Lost 6 to 8
v. West Coast At Westport Lost 9 to 14
v. Marlborough At Westport Won 8 to 0 {Seddon Shield}
v. North Otago At Westport Lost 3 to 6
v. Golden Bay-Motueka At Westport Won 8 to 3  {Seddon Shield}
v. West Coast At Westport Won 9 to 6 {Seddon Shield}
v. Canterbury At Christchurch Lost 3 to 26
v. Nelson At Westport Lost 0 to 6 {Seddon Shield}

When England was in New Zealand for a short tour in May, three trials were held for the choosing of the All Black sides for the two Tests, and in September a further series of trials when the New Zealand team to tour the British Isles, France and British Columbia was under consideration, was held; both sets of trials were at Wellington. Only J.B.Shaw (Westport Old Boys) was called to Wellington, he playing in two of the September trials.

J.B.Shaw also made his fourth appearance in the Inter-Island match, at Christchurch, as one of the South Island prop forwards.
