THE 1964 SEASON:
Buller experienced an interesting season, even if in the final accounting wins were few.
The team earned many plaudits by its endeavor, particularly by the manner in which the players faced the Ranfurly Shield challenge against the strong Taranaki XV, at New Plymouth.
The challenge instituted the only time Buller has appeared at New Plymouth and was also the first match ever played with the “Followers of Ferdinand” it would 21 years before they would met once again, in 1985 in a NPC Div 2 match at Westport.
The Seddon Shield was taken from West Coast, but lost a week later when Buller’s two tries were not sufficient to overcome Marlborough’s dropped goal and two penalty goals.
The nine fixtures played were:
v. West Coast At Westport Lost 5 to 9
v. Canterbury At Westport Lost 5 to 32
v. West Coast At Greymouth Lost 15 to 17
v. Taranaki At New Plymouth Lost 0 to 11 {Ranfurly Shield}
v. Bush At Westport Won 23 to 14
v. Marlborough At Blenheim Lost 8 to 11
v. West Coast At Greymouth Won 14 to 3 {Seddon Shield}
v. Marlborough At Westport Lost 6 to 9 {Seddon Shield}
v. Canterbury XV At Christchurch Lost 13 to 36
A well-earned Life Membership was conferred upon Mr.J.A.Harris by the Annual Meeting.
