THE 1965 SEASON:

After winning its first fixture, Buller then lost the remaining six, one of which was against Bay of Plenty, who was an opponent for the first time.

This was the programme undertaken:

v. West Coast At Greymouth Won 17 to 6
v. West Coast At Westport Lost 9 to 14
v. Marlborough At Westport Lost 13 to 16
v. Bay of Plenty At Westport Lost 9 to 16
v. Canterbury XV At Christchurch Lost 8 to 23
v. Marlborough At Blenheim Lost 6 to 27 {Seddon Shield}
v. Canterbury At Westport Lost 6 to 20

This season’s visitor to New Zealand was South Africa, as was usual Buller joining with West Coast to play against the Springboks; the match was played at Greymouth.

R.T.Dawe (Ngakawau), W.N.Forsyth (Westport), L.B.Halsall (Westport), O.H.Nahr (Westport White Star), B.P.Roche (Westport White Star), J.C.Smith (Westport), Brian Stack (Westport) and G.R.Wood (Westport) were the Buller representatives in the match, W. N. Forsyth being honoured with the captaincy. A week earlier the combined side had a game with a XV from the top end of the Seddon Shield area, at Westport, W. F. Duncan (Westport: White Star) also appearing.

Brian Stack was selected to play in the South Island trial, at Timaru, but injury prevented him from taking the field.

Only four Clubs again contested the senior championship, they being Ngakawau,Westport, Westport Old Boys and Westport White Star Clubs.
