THE 1970 SEASON:

A new season saw Buller double its total of wins for the season from one to two with the victories being achieved against West Coast and the “Canterbury XV”.

The highlight of the season was the determined Buller assault on the Ranfurly Shield against Canterbury. Buller led for much of the game and it was only a disputed try which allowed the Canterbury team to edge into the lead and eventually hold on to the Shield by 14-5.

The beginning of the decade also saw the first Buller appearances of a number of players who were to be major influences in the Buller Rugby scene in the future. Brian Morgan, a future Buller captain and All Black trialist, made his debut as did John Dickson in the backs, while Tom Aldridge, still playing Senior Club Rugby twenty three years later was a new representative in the pack.

Orlando Nahr, seemingly indestructible, Don Stevenson who was a reserve at the All Black trials but did not get a run, Robert Murray and Wayne Moultrie were the only players of the thirty to represent Buller during the season, to play in all Buller’s nine games.
