THE 1987 SEASON:

The 1987 season saw the economic and demographic factors biting hard in Buller.

Michael Bonisch, John McArthur and Michael Coghlan all went overseas, Malcolm Campbell went to Canterbury. Robert Elley had been forced out through injury and Mark Caldwell and Piet Groot played only one game each while Glenn Elley played only the first three games before he, too, was forced out through injury.

Not surprisingly, the defensive screen found it hard to cope and Buller conceded some large scores including a record 57 points to Marlborough in a Seddon Shield encounter.

No overseas team or National team visited Buller this season and no Buller players were selected for higher honours.

Matches played were:

v West Coast at Greymouth Lost 14-0
v Nelson-Bays at Westport Lost 10-17
v West Coast at Westport Drew 7-7
v North Otago at Oamaru Won 21-7
v South Canterbury at Timaru Lost 4-46
v Thames Valley at Westport Lost 10-25
v Marlborough at Blenheim Lost 3-57 {Seddon Shield}
