THE 1946 SEASON:<\/strong>
\nThis was a notable year for the Union, with a visit from the Australian touring side to Westport to meet a XV representing Seddon Shield districts, and Golden Jubilee celebrations.<\/p>\n

Buller had \ufb01ve players in the combined team against the Australians, George Anderson (Millerton Rangers), S. Anderson (Millerton Rangers), T. Coyne (Westport White Star), R. P. Hawes (Westport White Star) and W. J. Mumm jnr (Ngakawau), taking the field; the home XV lost the match (12-15), but had the satisfaction of gaining three tries to one.<\/p>\n

Prior to the selection of the Seddon Shield Districts side, a match was played at Nelson between teams featuring West Coast-Buller and Nelson, Marlborough and Golden Bay-Motueka players, Buller in addition to the five who subsequently were chosen having John Blair (Ngakawau), R. J.Finlayson (Westport), J. Fox (Westport), G. W. Kearns (Westport Old Boys \u2014 as a replacement during the match), J. A. Moseley (Waimangaroa United), A. S. Neighbours (Waimangaroa United) and F. J. Neighbours (Waimangaroa United) on view.<\/p>\n

The season\u2019s Inter-Island match was played at Wellington, W. J. Mumm, jnr making his second appearance for South Island; George Anderson was selected as a reserve.<\/p>\n

The Golden Jubilee celebrations took place in September, South Canterbury sending a team for the occasion.<\/p>\n

Owing to the Second World War the celebrations had been put forward from 1944.<\/p>\n

Including a Seddon Shield challenge, the seven matches which constituted the representative programme were:<\/p>\n
