About the Buller Rugby Union (BRU):

The Buller Rugby Union is an historic and proud provincial rugby union in the Buller region, dedicated to promoting rugby excellence and community engagement. We are committed to fostering talent at all levels of the game and providing a competitive environment for rugby players, clubs, and fans. We are a small hard working and collaborative team, that enjoys what we do.

The Role:

We are looking for a visionary leader to lead our team as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). You will oversee both the operational and strategic direction of rugby in the Buller region, collaborating with the Board, employees, sponsors, clubs, and the community. This is a critical role for strengthening BRU’s performance, increasing participation, and ensuring the BRU’s financial sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership:
    Lead the implementation of BRU’s strategic goals and operational plans, ensuring the development of successful rugby teams at all levels.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    Build strong relationships with clubs, sponsors, New Zealand Rugby, and other stakeholders. Encourage team members to develop relationships within the rugby and wider community.
  • Commercial Management:
    Drive revenue growth through sponsorships, partnerships, and community engagement. Lead efforts to secure new sponsorships and campaigns for rugby development.
  • Operational Oversight:
    Manage the day-to-day operations, including budgeting, HR processes, staff development, and rugby programs. Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
  • Rugby Development:
    Work closely with coaching team, players, and rugby development teams to strengthen player pathways and community engagement.
  • Key Attributes:
    Proven leadership in a sporting, non-profit, or commercial environment.

Passionate about rugby and community engagement, with the ability to inspire others.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Experience in strategic planning and executing growth initiatives.
A record of managing budgets and driving financial sustainability.

Understanding of New Zealand rugby and provincial rugby challenges, and most importantly, a Team Player, with the ability to work alongside a small, close-knit team, fostering collaboration and supporting team members in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications & Experience:
Previous experience in a senior leadership role.

Background in sports administration, rugby, or a related field (desirable).

Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors.

Proven ability to lead and manage a diverse team.
