THE 1958 SEASON:

Although Buller this year won only two of its ten fixtures, two others were drawn, and apart from the match at Christchurch the margins of defeat were generally small.

Successful defences of the Seddon Shield against Marlborough and against Golden Bay-Motueka were made before West Coast returned to Greymouth with the emblem of supremacy in the area of the participants.

Otago’s visit to Westport was made after a space of thirty-four years, and Wairarapa’s after thirty-three years, the complete list of matches for the season being:

v. Canterbury At Westport Lost 0 to 6
v. West Coast At Westport Lost 3 to 8
v. West Coast At Hokitika Drew 0 to 0
v. Marlborough At Westport Drew 3 to 3 {Seddon Shield}
v. Golden Bay-Motueka At Westport Won 9 to 8 {Seddon Shield}
v. Canterbury At Christchurch Lost 14 to 35
v. West Coast At Westport Lost 14 to 15 {Seddon Shield}
v. Wairarapa At Westport Lost 6 to 11
v. Otago At Westport Lost 11 to 16
v. Marlborough At Blenheim Won 14 to 10

J.B.Shaw (Westport Old Boys) was again a South Island trialist — at Christchurch. Trials were held this season to provide a Test side against the visiting Australians.

Karamea Sub-Union was unable to carry on, its assets being transferred to Karamea Club.

The Club was affiliated direct to Buller Union, and had teams in the junior and third grade competitions.
