THE 1974 SEASON:

The 1974 season was lighter than the 1973 season had been and was at least somewhat more successful.

Two of the eight games were won and those lost were generally much closer affairs than the previous season.

This was a meritorious achievement, especially as a number of strong players were not available. Orlando Nahr, Brian Stack and Jim Halsall had retired while Alan Moseley and Joe Syron were not available.

On the brighter side, former Canterbury and Nelson-Bays Representative, Calvin Cochrane and Rex Mumm, who was to play 75 games for Buller, both made their first appearances for Buller.

Buller again had a visit from a touring team, this year the Fijian National team were the tourists. Their size was just too much for the local team and the visitors won 25-3.

The season’s highlights were both personal milestones. Gerald Hart, who was captain of the team, passed 200 points for Buller while John Gilbert was selected to play for the South Island.

Matches played were:

v. Nelson-Bays at Westport Lost 7-10
v. Marlborough at Westport Lost 9-10
v. West Coast at Greymouth Lost 6-14
v. Fiji at Westport Lost 3-25
v. Marlborough at Blenheim Lost 14-26 {Seddon Shield}
v. West Coast at Westport Won 18-15
v. Poverty Bay at Westport Lost 9-20
