Buller were well beaten in their three matches, being more than 20 points behind at halftime in each of them. The second half effort against Mid Canterbury was Buller’s best 40 minutes of the season.

At fullback Alex Paterson stood out as a very dependable last line while Thor Manawatu, who had last represented three years ago, looked a polished halfback and Jesse Pitman-Joass was a confident first five-eighth. In the forward pack lock Petrus “Gabba” de Kock had a tremendous work rate and not far behind him was front rower Anthony Ellis.

Debuts were given to 13 players with flanker Dylan Rusbatch and lock Ben Pratt both having good first seasons, Pratt going on to play all 240 minutes. Alex Lean and Steven Soper had previously represented West Coast and Jesse Pitman-Joass was ex Tasman and West Coast.

With just four senior clubs to pick from player depth is an obvious issue and it is hoped the possible reformation of a senior team from the Reefton club for 2021 will be a step forward in this regard. For the first time since 2007, Buller played no fixture against neighbour West Coast.
