The Buller team and 700 supporters crossed to seek the shield, but they too were unsuccessful, though the Buller pack fought it out with the stronger Canterbury vanguard in a solid tussle that spoilt the game as a spectacle. Generally the Rugby was scrappy and of a poor standard. King, Andrews and Bowes scored tries for Canterbury, French converting two, a penalty goal by Holder being Buller’s response.
Leading by only 5-0 at halftime, the score reached 13-0, before Buller gained its points. Canterbury: The same as previously except that G.F.Hart* returned in place of Hattersley and F. T. J. French replaced Nolan at fullback. H.M.Milliken replaced Howell in the Canterbury pack just before the finish.

A return issued by the Canterbury Rugby Union showed that the gross receipts from the five matches played so far that season totalled £4,173. The Southland game brought in £1,469, the Otago game £785 and the West Coast game £1,132.
