Life Membership Citation – Hugh McMillan Buller Rugby Union
The Buller Rugby Union is honoured to bestow Life Membership upon Hugh McMillan, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to rugby across the Buller region – both on and off the field – and his unwavering commitment to the growth, strength, and future of our game.
Since joining the Buller Rugby Union Board in 2016, and serving as Chairman since 2018, Hugh has been a cornerstone of Buller rugby’s progress and resilience. His leadership has guided Buller Rugby through some of its most challenging and transformative periods, including the BRU restructure, BRU Strategic Review, COVID-19 pandemic, the McKinsey Review, and the recent NZR governance restructure. Throughout, he has dedicated an extraordinary amount of voluntary time, demonstrating tireless commitment and a deep sense of responsibility to the rugby community.
He has led the BRU Board through his strong understanding of governance, while also supporting the management team through his extensive business and management expertise.
Hugh has also been a powerful voice for Heartland Unions on the national stage, often representing them on national panels with distinction and integrity. His pivotal role in the Provincial Union funding working group led to a landmark increase in NZ Rugby support for community rugby – a legacy that will continue to benefit the grassroots game for years to come.
His impact has been equally profound at club level, particularly through his long-standing service to the Westport Rugby Football Club. Firstly as a player and then as a senior coach, Hugh led the team through multiple seasons, often stepping into the role when no one else would. In 2018, under his sole leadership, the team secured the Senior Shield for the first time in 15 years. Off the field, he has been an active and valued committee member since 2013, offering strong governance and tireless dedication to the club’s development.
As Hugh steps down from the Buller Rugby Board, we take this opportunity to thank him immensely for all he has given. His steady presence and support, strategic leadership, and commitment will be sorely missed.
